I found this obscure book in an Edinburgh junk shop. I did know a little about the artist Edward Seago - that he loved the sea and the sky and where the two met the land. He lived and painted mainly in East Anglia but also travelled to Singapore, Africa and, with the Duke of Edinburgh, Antarctica. His shows were so popular that the public would queue around the block. But he was not admired by art critics. He was a post-impressionist at a time when the fashion was for cubism, abstract expressionism, and all the other -isms. Seago was left in the dust, or in his case in the sands and mud of Norfolk. The tide goes out but eventually it comes in again and his art is still much loved and admired.

Over the years I returned again and again to
Tideline to smell the sea air of estuarine places and to reacquaint myself with characters such as Mrs Chubbs and her garden or 'Scientific' who lived in a eel hut on the reed beds of the Norfolk Broads.

The actor Andrew Watson (below) has captured Seago's introspective quality and the ebb and flow of memory and experience. I hope you are drawn into his world as I was.
